Obituary of Edward R. McManus
Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edward R. McManus passed away Thursday, July 9, in his home. He won the McManus 4 th of July golf outing the previous weekend.
Ed was born February 25, 1960 in Syracuse, New York, the son of Kathleen and Peter McManus. He is survived by his two sons, Christopher and Gregory, lifelong friend and companion, Donna L. Reid, his father, Peter, his four brothers, Timothy (Alexis), Thomas (Elizabeth), John (Tracy), and Daniel (Dina), and his nine nephews and nieces.
He grew up in Schenectady with his mother and father and four brothers, and graduated from Mount Assumption Institute in 1978.
After working at Saranac Lake for the 1980 Olympics, Ed took a part-time job at Price Chopper in 1980, and rode his bicycle to work. He married Barbara McEvoy in 1983; they were together for twenty-four years, and remained close as they raised their two boys. Ed lived and worked in Scranton, Ogdensburg, and Binghamton, and he became Regional Vice President for Price Chopper. He resided in Apalachin, New York, since 1995.
Ed loved to spend his free time on the golf course, at a ball game, on the deck with the grill, or a game of Wii Tennis with Donna. He especially loved hosting his sons and their friends. He played poker and blackjack, both at the casino and the family get-togethers. His brothers can confirm his trademark: he would bet everything on any two cards.
He loved his family, his work, and his hobbies, and his final days were among his happiest. He gave his time, his money, and his effort to his family, especially to Chris and Greg. His family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues knew they could count on Ed in times of need.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 16 at 10:30 AM at St. Kateri Parish (formerly St. Helen's), 1803 Union Street, Niskayuna. Family and friends are invited to calling hours at Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St. (at McClellan St.), in Schenectady, on Wednesday, July 15th from 10 AM to 2 PM and 4 PM to 7 PM.
As much as Ed gave to his employer, Price Chopper gave more to Ed and his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Ed's memory to the Food Bank of Central New York, a cause supported by the Golub Foundation.
