Obituary of Dorothea F. Godfrey

Dorothea F. Godfrey, 88, formerly of Berkley Ave in Schenectady died on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the Ellis Residential and Rehabilitation Center. Born on November 15, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Clark and Margurite Furman Godfrey. She was raised in Ohio till moving to Schenectady in 1928. Dorothea was the Great Granddaughter of the late Col. Robert Furman and Eve VanGuysling. Furman St., VanGuysling Ave. and Godfrey Lane are all named for Dorothea's ancestors. Her father Clark Godfrey, was the developer of the Rosendale Estates. Dorothea graduated from Lasell Junior College in Auburndale, Mass in 1942. Dorothea worked at Ellis Hospital making her way from a medical secretary to OR Supervisor. She was the Assistant Auditor at Ellis, as well as the Assistant Manager for the Col. Robert Furman Estate. Dorothea was the Office Manager for Dr. Janis Best from 1961 until she retired in 1985. She was an original Charter Member of the Schenectady Soroptimist Club, a Life Member of the Schenectady Historical Society, a member of the Schenectady Museum, the US Golf Assoication, the Schenectady Humane Society, and the Annie Schaefer Senior Citizens. Friends may call at Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., (at the corner of McClellan Street ) in Schenectady on Wednesday, August 4 from 10-11 am.
