Rexford- Betty Thornton, Longtime Rexford resident Mary Elizabeth Keegan Thornton passed away on October 11 at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa after a long illness.
Betty was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, John D Thornton, and her brother Harold Keegan. She is survived by her daughter Maureen (Bill) O'Connor of Stephentown NY, granddaughter Caitlin (Jonathan) Falls of Annandale VA, grandson Nicholas O'Connor of Tampa FL, sisters-in-law Janet Knapp and Patricia Eaton of Scotia, many nieces and nephews and loving friends the Deery family of Rexford.
Born January 14, 1922 in Schenectady NY, Betty was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School and Schenectady County Community College. During World War II Betty worked for her husband's family business, Thornton Coal and Oil Company in Schenectady. A past employee of General Electric, Mrs. Thornton retired from Niskayuna High School in 1985 after many years in the Audio-Visual Department.
For many years, Betty was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church and their Women's Club. She was an avid gardener and animal lover.
Contributions may be made in Betty's memory to Maplewood Manor's Resident Entertainment Fund 149 Ballston Ave Ballston Spa, NY 12020 so others can enjoy activities as she did.
The family thanks the staff at Maplewood Manor for the care, respect and kindness shown to Betty during her thirteen years in residence.
A private memorial service will be held.
