Obituary of Frank J. Leva

Frank J Leva passed away Wednesday August 28, 2013. Born in Schenectady on July 22, 1917, Frank was the son of the late Americo Leva and Florence Focusi. Frank was a stellar athlete and excelled at golf, bowling, swimming and diving. He coached the Schenectady CYO basketball team and the American Legion baseball team. He founded the United States Post Office golf league, which is still in existence today. He was a trained boxer, taught by champions of his day. Franks love of nature; the outdoors and world wide travel was unparalleled. Frank joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) camps prior to World War II then enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to the Royal Air Force in England. He was honorably discharged with a medal of honor. Following the war Frank worked for his brother Harry in Baum's Newsroom and went on to have a 30-year career as letter carrier with the US Post Office, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Frank married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Haggerty in April 1942 (2010) together they travelled the world over. Anyone who knew them said it was a love story of which movies are made. (Mr. Hollywood). He is predeceased by his loving wife Mary Elizabeth and his brothers, Harry, Louis, Anthony and Americo Leva. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen Leva Monaco, Gansevoort, Frank Jr Leva, Massachusetts, Joseph Leva, Schenectady, his grandchildren Elizabeth Ann Monaco Alexander (Jasper), Saratoga Springs, Eugene E Monaco, Schenectady, Kerry Leva (Boston and LA), Sarah Leva, Boston, Maria Leva, Worchester, Joey Komar-Leva, Schenectady and his great grandchildren, Zoe Rose and Charles (Charlie) Reed Alexander, Saratoga. The family wishes to extend their heart felt thank you to the wonderful dedicated staff on the C-wing at Ellis Hospital and to the blessed Hospice Angles, under the guiding light of Dr George Giokis, who cared for our father and grandfather. Above all, Frank was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather, who delighted in simply being with his family. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday September 2, 2013, 5pm-8pm at the Jones Funeral home, 1503 Union Street, Schenectady NY 346.3881. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday September 3, 2013 at 10:30am at St. John the Evangelist Church, Union Street, Schenectady NY. Burial will be at St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Schenectady, www.communityhospice.org, Disabled American Veterans, www.dav.org and The City Mission of Schenectady.
