Schenectady - Van der Bogert “Van” Shanklin, passed away July 21, 2023 at the Schenectady Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. Van was born in 1929 to Lavinia Van der Bogert and G. Bryan Shanklin. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School and Union College. He was predeceased by his parents, his wives Kathleen Cox and Mary Vosburgh, and his daughter Susan Mlodzianowski.
At the time of his passing, Van was a resident of Loudonville Assisted Living Residences. He retired in 1991 from his position with Schenectady County as Personnel Director and Director of Civil Service. Prior to that position, he was Deputy Mayor and Budget Officer for the City of Schenectady after retiring from The Schenectady Trust Company (Trustco) as Treasurer and COO. During that time, he was elected to represent the residents of the First Ward and the First District of the City of Schenectady on the County Board of Supervisors/Board of Representatives for two terms.
He is survived by his son Elliott W. Shanklin (Diane), son-in-law Paul Mlodzianowski, five grandchildren Jason (Stacey) and Joshua Mlodzianowski, Bryan, Jane and Claire Shanklin and great grandson Shai Mlodzianowski. He is also survived by three step-children Kipp Freeman (Bruce), Karen Puglisi (Peter) and Martha Finlay (Scott) along with their children.
Van loved to be with his family and thoroughly enjoyed spending time in his woodworking shop. He also loved being outdoors, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. His favorite places included the family camp in Dutchess County and the hunting camp in the Schoharie Hills that was shared with his best friends Pete Zakriski and Mark Miranda.
Visiting hours will be held at Jones Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave., Colonie from 4 pm to 6 pm on Friday August 25, 2023. A private burial will be held at the family plot in Vale Cemetery at the convenience of his family. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
