Obituary of Dorothy G. Foss

Dorothy Lois Gibb Foss June 12, 1923 – October 8, 2021 Dorothy (Dot) Lois Gibb Foss was born on June 12, 1923 in Machipongo, on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, to parents Emily Tabitha Ward and Obed Cecil Gibb. As a child she often chose to work in the fields with her dad, and she excelled in her education, graduating from Central High School. After secretarial school in Baltimore Maryland, she became a receptionist at the brand-new Pentagon in Washington DC, helping both visitors and “the brass” learn how to navigate the building. She married Albert Canute Foss, Jr. in Washington’s St. Matthew the Apostle Cathedral on June 6, 1943. The couple lived mostly in Schenectady NY and Waynesboro VA, with brief periods in Syracuse and Vestal NY, and Erie PA. In addition to being a real estate agent at one point, Dot was an active community volunteer and leader, at different times chairing charitable fundraising drives, organizing for the League of Women Voters and the American Heart Association, providing a wide variety of services for theater groups, and coordinating volunteers for the Shenandoah Valley Art Center and the Waynesboro Community Concerts Association. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, and siblings Louise Gibb Scott and Lynwood Thomas Gibb. Survivors include daughter Constance (Connie) Foss More and her husband Bruce More of Victoria BC Canada, and son Robert (Bob) Ward Foss of Cohoes NY. Granddaughter Alexis More Lamontagne her husband Eric and great-granddaughter Cadence live in Victoria BC, and grandsons Jason Foss (Clifton Park, NY) and Schuyler Foss (Burnt Hills, NY) live in the Albany area. Since her move to a nursing home in Schenectady NY and especially during the pandemic, she had missed regular in-person visits with her Victoria family, great-nieces Kimberly Meyer and Margo Landon, and dear extended Waynesboro families the Prettymans and Keefers. A memorial service will be held in early April in Waynesboro VA, at the time of her interment beside Al in Augusta Memorial Park. We will all remember her infectious laugh, her people-loving (sometimes mischievous) “red-head” behavior, and her indomitable spirit.
