Obituary of Joseph D. Baciewicz

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joseph D. Baciewicz, 66, of Schenectady, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 21, at his home. Born on August 6, 1952, Joe was a lifelong resident of Schenectady.

Joe was a graduate of Linton High School, Siena College and completed his Master’s Degree at the College of St. Rose. After several years teaching at Saratoga Catholic Central High, Joe joined Niskayuna High School faculty where he taught math and computer science for more than 33 years. Joe enjoyed teaching and, after retirement, served as an adjunct professor at Siena College.

Joe is survived by his sisters Barbara Baciewicz and Martha Alexander (Scott), nieces Sarah (Pam Sleeper) and Katherine Alexander, nephews Stephen and Michael Alexander, and great niece Skylar Alexander and great nephew Henry Alexander. He is also survived by his aunt Clara Domblewski, numerous cousins and his best friend George Bollock. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph E. and Helen Baciewicz.

Joe’s last few years were medically challenging, but his family and friends will remember his life as one of generosity with his time and talents. Joe could make and do almost anything, from putting a computer system together to renovating his house, to maintaining his beloved 1956 Willys Jeep. If someone needed help, Joe was there and knew how to get the job done, whether it was helping someone in need or the community at St. Kateri. Joe was an avid gardener, and often canned his produce. Many will remember the beautifully labeled jars of tomatoes, sauce and pickles that he shared so freely. Joe was an excellent cook and enjoyed hosting family occasions, providing holiday feasts and backyard barbecues where everyone felt comfortable and happy. Joe had a special place in his heart for New Harbor, Maine where he spent vacations for more than 30 years.

Special thanks to Peter Melnyk, Joe’s caregiver for the past several years, who made it possible for Joe to live in the home he loved.
