Obituary of Howard Charles Fiedler
Niskayuna – Howard Charles Fiedler, 93, passed away suddenly on February 6, 2018, with his son Stuart and daughter-in-law Deborah by his side.
Howard was born on June 24, 1924, the only child of Hazel and Charles Fiedler, in Chicago Illinois. After graduating from the Lane Technical High School, he served in the Army as a meteorologist during WWII. As an undergraduate at Purdue University, he met Undine Southworth, of Des Moines Iowa. Howard and Undine married in 1949 and moved to Boston Massachusetts, where Howard earned a Doctorate of Science in Metallurgy from MIT. He spent his professional career working for the General Electric Research and Development Center in Niskayuna. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed hiking the Adirondacks. Upon retirement, he and Undine travelled the country, and visited with their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed time with friends and daily swims at their camp on Canada Lake. He volunteered in the community, including at the county jail library and as an escort for Schenectady Planned Parenthood. He was a regular supporter of local arts, theater and music. Howard was predeceased by his loving wife and life-companion, Undine, in 2008.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Suzanne Fiedler, and their daughters Sarah and Katherine; his daughter and son-in-law, Anne Fiedler and Doug Washburn; his son Brian Fiedler and his daughters Lisa and Greta; his son Alan Fiedler; and his son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Deborah Fiedler, their son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Alesia Carras and grandchildren Hudson and Keegan.
A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady on February 12 at 2:00. Donations in Howard’s memory may be made to Schenectady Planned Parenthood, 1040 State Street, Schenectady, NY 12307.
