Karen, my deepest condolences to you and JJ's family. JJ and I were squadron mates in VA-93 and served aboard the USS Midway 83-85. I was a nugget and JJ led the way.
Rest in peace brother.

Karen, I just heard the news about your loss, and I am very sorry. I served with Jeff on the Midway, and was in the other A-7 squadron. But I was on the same LSO (Landing Signal Officer) team as Jeff (always "JJ" to me), so we got to know each other pretty well. He was a terrific pilot, officer, LSO, and guy. And it sounds like he continued to make the most out of life in the 32 years since I last saw him. My condolences to you and your family.

Dear Karen and family,
It’s been quite some time since I had connected with Jeff (Penders), but that makes it no less impactful on how deeply he touched my life and those of countless others epitomized by such a meaningful life that he lived.
I only have touchstones and mental snapshots of Jeff over the years - from our silly antics at St. Lawrence (which I will always cherish) - to meeting you and Jeff in Corpus Christi when he was based at Chase Field ( where he was a family man and budding Top Gun) - to several years ago at an SLU reunion where he was ever the modest, funny, down-to earth guy that we all loved – and who had accomplished so much.
I am so very sorry for your loss. His is a light that has left us way before its time. When I think of Jeff, it warms my heart - I always hear his laugh and see his ever-present smile – he enriched my life. The world is a much better place because Jeff Mallia was in it. I am very grateful that he was in my life and that he was my friend.
Warmly,
Hoppy

Very saddened to hear the news about Jeff. I spent many hours on Okemo with Jeff when I worked Race Crew, and he was as good as it gets. A great coach, wonderful sense of humor, and a kind person who really cared about the kids he coached. A wonderful man who will be greatly missed. My heart and thoughts are with his family.
RIP and Godspeed Jeff Mallia.

So very sorry to hear such gut wrenching news.
I loved visiting him & Hugh every summer while he tweaked his plane for the Oshkosh race.
Will fondly recall a few beautiful sunsets with a glas of scotch in his hangar after working on planes, telling stories, recalling fun trips, and lamenting that no-one else hung out at the airport enough.
Godspeed and tailwinds my friend.

Dear Mallia Family,
I'm finding hard to believe that we lost the Top Gun of our insurance, golf, and aviation region!
Words can't express my sorrow and condolences, but words are all I have right now.
I met the Mallia and Bryant brothers in 1982 and it was always difficult to figure which
set of brothers was the smarter, funnier, handsomer (it that a word?), more athletic,
more competent insurance agents, and best fathers (I'll also add chop busters to the list!)
Spending time with Jeff Mallia was like l hanging out with a super star. Most
sales oriented independent agents hired technology experts for their agency but at
Sykes-Mallia Jeff was the expert! I remember calling the agency looking for Jeff but
he was home sleeping because he had spent the whole night at the office reengineering
the entire office computer system. How can you argue with a guy that builds his own plane?
I also remember when one of his sons was confronted with cancer in his teen years and his
Dad relentlessly focused his impressive lifetime of skillset to become an expert in that kind of cancer.
I brokered some commercial insurance cases with Jeff and he was tenacious about providing
the correct coverages. He was fun to watch at a prospective customer's place of business either
at the initial meeting or the quote proposal. He made it look easy to explain and entertain
customers about complex insurance coverages. And a small aside: those presentations were fun to
to witness Jeff concentrate on one customer because it was generally hard to lasso Jeff's attention -
he always had a lot going on!
The Mallia family is amazing in so many ways that no one in the family should depart before their time. We are
all robbed by Jeff's sudden passing. The great thing is that Jeff left us with so many enduring memories
and motivations. The family will take the grief the hardest but friends, acquaintances, and customers
aren't too behind in the suffering over losing Jeff.
Sincerely,
Bruce Clements

Karen, Jack and Sean:
I knew your husband/dad as well as Uncle Joe during my years as a member of Pinehaven Country Club. I thought both the Mallia brothers were two of the nicest guys I ever met in my life...which is not an understatement because I got to know their dad Hugh first. When I was on the board of directors for Pinehaven CC I wrote an article in the July 2001 chatterbox where I tried my best to put into words how important it was to honor our WWII veterans. Of the ten names I paid tribute to, one stands out: Mr. Hugh Mallia. I am going to guess that Jeff obviously made his dad proud with his Navy flying career, but he had to have made Hugh prouder by the way he (and Joe ) conducted themselves on the golf course. Of all the guys in the Pinehaven Sundowners league I got to play against, I always looked forward the most to playing against Jeff or Joe.
I knew we would have a good match, but more importantly, a good time. I remember during one match I said to Jeff that I had just finished reading the book "The Right Stuff" and joked 'come on, it's not really that tough to land a jet on an aircraft carrier, is it ? ' My god, I remember he beat the crap out of me that night and I found out what being a Top Gun is all about. Later that same year a sad event happens on 9-11. I happened to be playing Joe that Thursday night in the league. Turns out with all the planes grounded, one of the out of state players in the "Mallia" Invitational can't make it. Joe gives me an on the spot invite. I accept. We drive up to Vermont for the event. All of the guys there are Jeff and Joe wannabes (which now includes me). I proceed to have the best couple of days of my life on the golf course-and off, thanks to the friendship of the Mallia brothers. My only regret is that the original player was able to make it back the next year-I so wanted to be a part of the Mallia brother Invitational. Hugh was a charter member of the "Greatest Generation" but I am going to bet that some of Hugh's mates are welcoming Jeff to their table right now. So proud to be able to say he was my friend.

Dear Karen, Jack & Sean ~
No words can soften the blow of the great loss of such an outstanding person as Jeff - leader with integrity, head coach with conviction, do-er, seeker of the greater, comedian, and of course unbeatable friend to so many. Jeff touched hundreds of aspiring athletes lives (as well as their parents'), which will stay on forever with his athletes, on & off of the hill. Jeff led a tight ship and his athletes delivered. Jeff will forever be in our hearts. Our love & deepest condolences from the Keogh family ~ Lorraine, Danielle, Nicolle & Jackson ('Tuna','Noodler')

I am so sorry to hear about Jeff's untimely death.I only met him a few times at Oshkosh, but came to consider him a good friend. When I lost the engine in my Long EZ nearly four years ago, he quickly agreed to coach me (by e-mail) in the installation of a larger engine in my airplane. He was so helpful in helping me to resolve cooling issues, and I have been so thankful for his input. I was looking forward to racing with him next summer in the AirVenture Cup race and will truly miss seeing him there.
May God's blessings be with you all.

My heart breaks for you. Your father was such a huge presence in so many lives...a leader of leaders, and an incredible inspiration to so many young athletes, making them believe the impossible was possible, and coaxing that possibility out of them. He was loved and admired by so many. I cannot find words to compensate for your loss, but please accept my deepest sympathies. Much love,

Karen,
My sincere condolences for Jeff's passing.
He was indeed my favorite A-7 squadronmate and I simply have a hard time believing he is gone.
He was the hardest working officer I knew, a great friend, and always went above-and-beyond the call on anything requested of him. I will never forget when he and Bram built a working computer software system for the squadron in 30 days — unbelievable, actually, and it was used for a decade thereafter in VA-93 and VA-303 A-7 and F/A-18 squadrons.
He loved you very much then in Japan when I was with you both, and I am sure he always cherished you. He always had kind words to say about you.
Much love and sadness for you in your loss,
Mike Detchemendy
