When I saw the obituary in the Daily Gazette 5/16/2018, I believed there could only be one person who could have been a Witbeck and later a Mrs. Gage with a first name of Sarah, and approximately 100 years old at time of death. Now I see I am right; this was the Schalmont "gifted and talented " (special class we were called back in the late 1950's to 1960's) teacher who made my later years at Jefferson Elementary School so much fun and enriched beyond what the elementary teachers could do for us. I was in Miss Witbeck's, later Mrs. Gage's, enrichment classes in 5th and 6th grades. I remember her as a very beautiful sophisticated woman, with a real flare for jewelry and fashion. She helped the many students in her classes to reach out and explore areas they were interested int that were not covered in enough depth in those lower grades. For me, she fed an interest in myths and legends, and later on, I studied on my own and did a project about the Ancient Roman civilization.
She will be sorely missed. I wish I had an opportunity to thank her while she was alive, but I can thank her via her surviving family.
Sincerely, Cynthia Weisheit Seacord, Schalmont Class of 1969.
