Niskayuna - John VanCoevering , 83, of Niskayuna, died Monday, August 18, 2008, at Ellis Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born in Grand Haven, Michigan, son of the late John and Angie Hoffman VanCoevering. John graduated from Grand Haven High School, attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids and graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelors degree in Engineering, on the Navy V-12 program, in 1945. He entered the Navy in 1942 and after graduating from college he entered active duty Sept 1945 and was Honorably discharged in March 1946. He joined General Electric in 1946 in Schenectady, NY, then in 1952 moved to Edmore, Michigan for 17 years. Then in 1969, he moved back to Schenectady where he worked at the General Electric R & D Center in Niskayuna and retired in 1986 as Manager of Facilities.
John was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Schenectady for 60 years, he was a former Elder, Deacon and Trustee, a member of Gideons and the GE Elfun Society.
Survived by his wife of 61 years, Rachael Giddings VanCoevering; three children, Bradley VanCoevering and his wife Debbie of Miami, FL, James VanCoevering and his wife Luz of Oak Ridge, TN, Karen Klint and her husband Timothy of Rexford, NY; nine grandchildren, Lana, Jonathan, Alicia, Sofia, Alexandra, Angie, David, Amanda and Sandra. Also survived by two sisters, Ella Rosema of Spring Lake, MI and Dorothy Tierman of Grand Haven, MI, and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Friday, August 22nd, at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church in Schenectady with Rev. Michael R. Alford officiating. Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., (at McClellan St.), Schenectady. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in John's memory to First Presbyterian Church, 115 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12305. Burial will be in Lake Forest Cemetery, Grand Haven, MI.
