Niskayuna -Dr. James W. Nelson 76, of Niskayuna and Bolton Landing, New York, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 16, 2010.
Born August 16, 1933 in Gardner, Massachusetts, son of the late Rev. Ernest E. and Edna Anderson Nelson. Dr. Nelson graduated from Jamestown High School in Jamestown, New York. He attended Northwestern University, graduating with a BA in history in three years. He then received his medical degree from Temple University Medical School in 1958. He joined the Naval Reserve and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant in 1970.
On June 15, 1957, he married Janet Mae Myers in York, Pennsylvania. After he finished an internship in York, Pennsylvania, they moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where he had a fellowship in orthopedics at the Mayo Clinic. In 1963 after completing his fellowship, Dr. Nelson joined a practice in orthopedics in Schenectady.
Dr. Nelson was a member of the Schenectady County Medical Society. He served as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir of St. George's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed many and varied hobbies and interests: he painted in watercolor; did calligraphy and woodworking; built furniture; collected antiquarian books; and read widely. There was a showing of his artwork in November, 1980 at St. George's Great Hall. He was an avid sailor, tennis player, and water skier, and loved any game, especially word games.
Predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Janet Mae Nelson on October 1, 2009, Dr. Nelson is survived by two daughters, Kirsten (Thomas) Schaetzel, of Vienna, Virginia and Karin (Jeffrey) Meyer of Orchard Park, New York, and a son, Kevin (Darlene) Nelson of Schenectady, New York. Dr. Nelson has five grandsons. Predeceased by his brother Warren Nelson.
Viewing will be held at Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union Street, Schenectady New York on Monday, June 21, 2010, 6 PM to 8 PM. Funeral service will be at First Presbyterian Church, 209 Union Street, Schenectady, New York on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 11 AM. Internment will be at Bolton Rural Cemetery, on Rt. 9N, Diamond Point, New York, at 2 PM.
