Obituary of Gertrude T. Carnahan
Please share a memory of Gertrude to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gertrude Carnahan died suddenly on Saturday, May 26, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. Formerly from Yonkers, New York, Ms. Carnahan resided at Oakmont Street in Niskayuna and also at Sea Oats Drive in Juno Beach, Florida.
Gertrude, known by family and friends as Terry, was born Gertrude Teresa Linsmeier in the Bronx, NY on November 25, 1919. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alois and Emily Linsmeier, and her sister, Hedwig Linsmeier.
Terry grew up in Yonkers, NY, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1937. She married James Carnahan in 1942, who passed away in 1979, after 36 years of marriage. Later, Terry shared her life with companion Albert Haas of Paramus, New Jersey, who also predeceased her.
Perhaps ahead of her time, Terry was not only a devoted mother and grandmother, but also a business woman and entrepreneur. She worked as an executive secretary at Hamden Glazed Paper in New York City for many years, and went on to become co-owner of Lori-Kay Products, a successful specialty paper company based in Yonkers, NY.
Terry's pride was her family. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law James and Eileen Carnahan, grandsons Bryan and Scott Carnahan, her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and the family of Albert Haas, whom she also took to her heart as her own. Additionally, Terry recently welcomed Kana Ando into the family, having attended the wedding of Kana and grandson Scott Carnahan in Maui earlier this month.
Terry had a generous and fun-loving nature, and created close ties with friends and neighbors in New York, Florida, and around the world. After retiring in 1998, Terry was active as a hospital volunteer in Juno Beach, FL and as a school volunteer in Schenectady, NY. She attended St. Helen's Church in Schenectady, NY and the St. Patrick Church in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. She enjoyed traveling, entertaining, gardening, the arts and exercise.
Funeral arrangements are through Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union Street, Schenectady, NY. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 1st between 7pm and 9pm. The Funeral Mass will be conducted at St. Helen's Church on Saturday, June 2nd at 9am, and internment will take place at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY, at 1 PM.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Schroon Lake, NY 12870 will be appreciated.
