Obituary of Chester S. Hernas

Chester S. Hernas of Schenectady died Tuesday February 11, 2014, peacefully at his home surrounded by his devoted family. He was 93 years old.
Born July 20, 1920 in Schenectady, he was the son of Karol and Katarzina Hernas.
Chet graduated from Nott Terrace High School where he played football with the Nott Terrace Night Hawks. When World War II started he enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1942. He served in the Pacific as a Radioman. He was awarded medals for American Theatre, Asiatic Pacific w/ 1 star WW II Victory Medal and the Purple Heart. He was Honorably discharged in 1946.
He was employed with the ALCO Company and G.E. He later became the Proprietor of the Village Inn Tavern on Rosa Rd. for 25 years.
He was an avid gardener and Golfer. He was loving and generous to all his family including his many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his brothers, Carl, Edward Alexander (Moes) Hernas and sisters, Genevieve Hernas and Emilia (Annie) Hernas Higgins.
Survived by his nieces, Marion Cognett, Debra LaFrenier, Dr. Carla Hernas and Denise Hernas; nephews, Robert, John, Donald Higgins and Carl Hernas, along with many grand nieces and nephews and his beloved cat "Wicket".
Chet made a lasting effect on the lives of those around him and will forever remain in their hearts. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his generosity and always putting others needs before his own.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 AM at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., (at McClellan St.), Schenectady. Calling hours will be Saturday morning from 9 AM to 11 AM for those who wish to call.

Uncle Chet, thank you for all you have done. We love you and will miss you so much. It has been an awesome Journey we shared with you, may you rest in peace. thank you Your family.
