Obituary of Janet Mae Nelson

Niskayuna-Janet Mae Nelson, nee Myers , 79, of Niskayuna and Bolton Landing, New York, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Reston Medical Center, in Reston, Virginia with members of her family at her side. Mrs. Nelson was born on August 27, 1930 in Hampstead, Maryland to Ana Mae and Emory Myers. She graduated from West York High School. York, Pennsylvania, in 1948 and from Temple University School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1952. After graduating from Temple University, she worked as a charge nurse in the neuro-surgical unit of Temple University Hospital and the Chevallier Jackson Department of Laryngoscopy. On June 15, 1957, she married James Nelson of Jamestown, New York in York, Pennsylvania. After Dr. Nelson finished medical school and an internship in York, Pennsylvania, they moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where their first two children were born. In 1963 after completing Dr. Nelson's fellowship,, they moved to Schenectady, New York, where their third child was born. Mrs. Nelson was active in many civic and church activities including the Junior League of Schenectady, the Medical Auxiliary, of which she served as President, and Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, where she served both as a volunteer and as a board member. Her church activities at First Presbyterian Church include service as Director of Deaconess activities, Lenten Luncheon Coordinator, and Coordinator of Services for Shut-Ins. She was also an active member of the Medical Auxiliary Garden Club. Mrs. Nelson's hobbies and interests included gardening, reading, bird-watching, walking, and making stenciled lampshades, quilts, and other crafts. She was a gourmet cook and enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives. She loved to laugh and her zest for life was infectious. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. James Nelson, of Reston, Virginia, two daughters, Kirsten (Thomas) Schaetzel, of Vienna, Virginia and Karin (Jeffrey) Meyer of Orchard Park, New York, and a son, Kevin (Darlene) Nelson of Schenectady, New York. Mrs. Nelson has five grandsons. She is also survived by a brother, Jack (Lorraine) Myers, of Thomasville, Pennsylvania and two nieces, four nephews and their families. Viewing will be held at Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union Street, Schenectady New York on Monday, October 5, 2009, 5-7PM, Funeral service will be at First Presbyterian Church, 209 Union Street, Schenectady, New York on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 10AM. Internment will be at Bolton Rural Cemetery, on Rt. 9N, Diamond Point, New York, at 2PM. The family wishes that in lieu of flowers contributions in Mrs. Nelson's name be made to First Presbyterian Church, Mission Fund (P.O. Box 6, Schenectady, New York, 12301).
