Obituary of Marguerite E. Eckner

Niskayuna - Marguerite E. Eckner (formerly Bleau), 93, of Niskayuna, NY died peacefully on December 9, 2012 at Ellis Hospital after a short illness. She was born in North Hero, VT on August 31, 1919 a daughter of Harold E. Blow and Anna Maria (McCaffray) Blow, and grew up in Grand Isle, VT on Lake Champlain. She resided in Amherst, NY for over 40 years until her move to Niskayuna where she lived for 19 years. She attended Burlington High School in Burlington, VT and completed nurse training at Boston General Hospital where she earned her R.N. degree. She practiced her nursing skills for 47 years in various capacities, most notably as a Lieutenant in the US Navy during WWII. Later, her work took her to Miami, FL and finally to Buffalo, NY where she met her future husband, Milton F. Eckner, who predeceased her in 1986. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Amherst, NY and Eastern Parkway Methodist Church in Schenectady, NY. She was active in various church groups, a leader of a Girl Scout troop, and an avid defender of wildlife and participant in many animal organizations. An enthusiastic traveler, she traversed the globe from New Zealand to the Middle East to Hawaii and was always up for an adventure. She will also be remembered for her rose garden, her famous pecan pies, and her love of lobster dinners. She is survived by a daughter Gay L. Feher (Michael) of Clifton Park, NY, a grandson Matthew Burns (Karin) of Norwalk, CT, a granddaughter Melissa Kantesaria (Dev) of King of Prussia, PA, three great-grandchildren Dylan, Ryan, and Madeleine, niece Diane Maxam of Rye, NH, niece Dianne Killeen of Amherst, NY, and nephew Thomas Murray of Buffalo, NY. The family would like to thank the nurses and aides at Glendale Nursing Home and Ellis Hospital for their compassionate care and support. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery in Buffalo, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the ASPCA, your local animal shelter, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
