Obituary of Alice O. Whitney

Alice O. Whitney, 88, of Glenville passed away peacefully on Sunday April 17, 2016 at the Teresian House. Alice was born in Hillsdale, NY on May 13, 1927 to the late Alice and James O'Hara. She was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School, as well as the College of Saint Rose, where she majored in Nursing. From there, she went on to work at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She then came back to the Capital Region where she was employed at Hallmark Nursing Home and Ellis Hospital. Alice also worked at Conifer Park, where she retired from after approximately 15 years of dedication. Alice was predeceased by her siblings, Doris Bushnell, Francis O'Hara and James O'Hara, as well as her first husband John Ives, who passed away in 1977. She was also predeceased by her second husband of 39 years John Whitney in 2012, who she always claimed was "the love of her life." Together, they blended their families and considered each other's children as their own. Alice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. To some family and close friends, she was known as "Buddy." She was also given the nickname "Meme" by her firstborn granddaughter, which stuck with her for the rest of her life. She loved her home and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, adorning her beloved deck with as many plants and flowers as she could each Summer. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren and always found a way to have fun, which is all she wanted to do in life. She was always supportive, accepting and involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren, leaving them with memories they will cherish always. Survivors include her children, Mark (Mary Lou) Ives, Elizabeth Beaudoin, James (Vicki Garcia) O'Hara, Sharon (Mike Mastrangelo) Wheeler, William Whitney, Carl Whitney, Michael (Cheryl) Whitney, John (Jan) Whitney; grandchildren Jessica (Alfred) Blumenthal, Jennifer Beaudoin, Doree Garcia-O'Hara, Sean Garcia-O'Hara, Patrick and Colin Whitney, Jonathan and Samuel Maurice, Patrick, Benjamin and Steven Wheeler, Thomas Whitney, Catherine Shupe, Christopher Whitney, Raymond Mahoney, Samantha Whitney; as well as her son-in-law Paul Beaudoin. Calling hours are Wednesday, April 20th from 5PM to 8PM at Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St.,( at McClellan St.). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning, April 21st at 10:30 AM at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, 1803 Union St., Niskayuna. Interment will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff on floor 2B of the Teresian House for the wonderful care they provided and utmost compassion they showed to Alice and her family.
