Hi 'Normal,' and Family,
First and foremost, please accept our most heartfelt condolences.
I was the final tenor (the last of seven, depending on who you talked with about it) with Grandma's Boyfriends, and I believe that is where I learned how much fun one can have in a quartet...especially the comedic style of the three 'veterans' of Jimmy Neal, Frank Papparella, and Joe!
I learned early on that whenever we performed Rigoletto, I dared not to look directly at the other three, especially Joe when we got to the part where the basso would sing, "You make-a me look-a-like a fool!!" The animation with his face was just so....well, teriffic! As Joe stated to me once, "We never lost an audience!'
And of course, the good times we had at the Lake Placid chorus retreats, where everyone wanted to be with the group that Joe was with when the joke telling began!! Barb and I still talk about those times.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I worked for Joe at New York telephone at Watt St, Schenectady just before he retired. He was very well liked and respected by the men there. I was sorry to see him retire. He was one of my best and favorite foreman. My prayers to your family. Paul

I've known Joe for many years.......always loved his humor & his sense of fairness....heard him sing at the Racing City Chorus concerts & the Barber Shop Quartet(they were so goood) he sang in......once back in the late 60's he let me use his tools to make a flower box for a friend....I had never done such a thing before but with his help & much patience it turned out really well......I've always considered his daughters as part of my extended family.....my favs......and my very special friend Norma...love all of you & so glad I got to see your Dad & you in May......Now he is free & I know singing up a storm & throwing a ball to Lucky <3

I never had the pleasure of knowing Joseph. I only know that the ripples of his life reached me and changed my life... saved my life. This was through his daugher, Laura, who set me on a path to new faith, new love, and a new life. Joseph must have done a great job in raising and influencing a daughter who had such an effect, not only on me, but on countless others I am sure. God is smiling on him now and he is being welcomed by the past loved ones whose lives and loved ones he has influenced through Laura.

Sorry for your loss. I will miss Joe being at our breakfast group from chuch. I enjoyed going to see Joe last Christmas when we sang Christmas songs together at the nursing home. He had a great voice & we had fun singing those Christmas carols. My sincere sympathies to your whole family.

Karen and I grieve along with Norma and the entire Lovell clan over Joe's passing. He was a tough Marine, and also a very proud husband, father, and grandfather to his family. Always 'in charge', you always knew where you stood with him. We shared a mutual respect. His passing leaves an empty space in the world, but finally a long-awaited rest for those who saw to his needs over the past several years. May God's warm hands surround you during this period of loss and comfort you with his blessings and grace.
