Boleslaw Wierzbowski, 91, of Niskayuna passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 2, 2013.
Boleslaw was born and raised on his family's farm in Lomza, Poland, by his parents, the late Antoni and Genowefa (Kosikowski) Wierzbowski.
Boleslaw served proudly in the Polish Army during World War II. After being taken prisoner in Russia at the beginning of the war, he survived and went on to drive supply trucks throughout the Middle East and Africa. He later saw battle as a paratrooper in Europe, most notably in the Battle of Arnhem in 1944. After the war he lived briefly in England and Scotland before immigrating to the United States in 1951.
After settling in upstate New York, Boleslaw was employed in a number of capacities, including 20 years at General Electric in the motors/turbine operation.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Halina (Wrobel) Wierzbowski, their daughter, Carolina Wierzbowski and their son, Matthew Wierzbowski.
Boleslaw will be remembered for his commitment to his family, strong will, a colorful sense of humor and a love of history and nature.
Calling hours are Friday from 11am to noon at Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12309. A private funeral service will follow at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Niskayuna Fire Department District# 2, 2772 Troy Rd. Niskayuna, NY 12309.
