Please share a memory of Everett to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Niskayuna- Everett Lloyd Rivest, on May 8, 2009, of Niskayuna died peacefully at home in the presence of his loving family. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Lloyd was born on July 8, 1921 in Ovid, MI. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1943 with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. His employment at General Electric was interrupted by World War II when Lloyd joined the US Navy as a commissioned officer. He studied at the US Navy radar and fire control schools at Bowdoin, MIT, and Bell Laboratories and then he operated and maintained radar fire-control systems in the Pacific Theater. In 1946, Lloyd rejoined General Electric in Schenectady, starting at the Aeronautics and Ordinance Systems Division where he became project engineer for interceptor armament and control. His career at GE spanned four decades during which he had many roles, including manager of Advanced Information Processing System(continuing at the Corporate Research Development unit in Niskayuna from 1965), of Automation and Control Systems, and of Technical Relations for Electronics Science and Engineering. Lloyd was a graduate of GE's Advanced Engineering Program, and after 40 years of service he retired from GE in 1984. In addition to his achievements, Lloyd was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Elfun Society, the New York Academy of Sciences and a senior member of the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers. In addition, Lloyd was a Professional Engineer licensed by the State of New York. Lloyd was an active member of Schenectady's First United Methodist Church, where he was Financial Secretary for 26 years and Chairman of the Columbarium Committee. Lloyd loved gardening and was a certified Master Gardener. When he retired, GE granted him lifelong gardening rights in the GE community garden near the R&D lab. Lloyd is survived by his wife Shirley whom he married in 1945 in Cambridge, MA. He is also survived by his four children: Prof. Ronald Rivest (Gail Dotson) of Boston, MA; Prof. Brian Rivest (Mary Jane Adams) of Cortland, NY; Rachel Rivest, PhD (Steve Averbuch, MD) of Philadelphia, PA; Martha Stanton (Mark Stanton) of Seattle, WA; and by his seven grandchildren: Alexander, Christopher, Emily, Julie, Alanna, Kayla and Nolan. The family would like to express their gratitude to the aides who expertly and lovingly cared for Lloyd the last couple of years so he could remain at home with Shirley. Lloyd was known for his strong sense of right and wrong, a dedicated work ethic and an excellent sense of humor. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 16th, at 3pm, with a reception after the service. His remains will be inurned in the Columbarium at the First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lloyd's memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church (608 State Street, Schenectady, NY 12305).
