I am so sorry to learn of the death of Aunt Dorothy. I remember her fondly from my childhood, when she was a favorite aunt, always welcoming and cheerful. I remember also the excellent care that she gave to my grandfather and grandmother, and how grateful my father, her brother, was for all that she did for their parents.

Dorothy was a dear friend for many years while I was living in Minot. I have many happy memories of enjoying supper with her and Bill along with great discussion. Dorothy was a very animated person who experienced life to its fullest. Her Catholic faith was very important to her as was her commitment to her friends. My last visit with Dorothy was in Minot at her home where she warmly received me and my wife. She will be dearly missed. May she rest in the peace or our Lord.

I was saddened to receive the notice of Aunt Dorothy's death. The last memory that I have of her is being taken by my parents (John and Maybelle Eiler) to Minot to visit. My Grandma Eiler was in a bed in a bedroom of Dorothy's house being cared for by Dorothy. Grandma appeared to my young eyes to be dead but she wasn't. I don't know how long Dorothy cared for her but this fits with the caring that she evidently exhibited all of her life. I have photographs of Aunt Dorothy - one that stands out in my mind is of Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Bill coming down the steps of the church after their wedding ceremony. If you'd like, I could mail you copies. Of course, I'd have to dig a little. My address is Rosalie Immel 95 Charleston Ave. Columbus, OH 43214

I will always remember going to North Dakota every summer to visit Grandma Dorothy and Grandpa Bill. It may not sound like Disney World, but we were always so excited. My sisters and I loved to dress up in grandma?s old nursing uniform; complete with white tights and a nursing cap. We would play for hours each taking turns to be ?Dorothy Slater, RN? and nursing the others back to health. My Grandmother would tell us great stores about when she was a nurse and I loved to hear them, but it wasn?t until I was older that I realized how special that really was.

Many say wakes and funerals are for the living; they present a way to grieve, to acknowledge the passage of life, and a way to remember those that are no longer with us. They are also a time to rejoice in a life well lived, to remember our catholic faith, and to really believe that Grandma Dorothy is in a better, happier place.

Dear Helen, I know you well enough to understand that this loss of your mother is still a little too soon. Couldn't God have given her just a bit more good time? You are such an inspired leader of the RCIA and always able to pass along hope, but I know when a loss hits home, there is a deep longing for just a bit more time. Heaven CAN wait-for us the living when it comes to our families. I will hold you in my thoughts and prayers and I thank God for the humanity you bring to our meetings.
