Obituary of Joseph V. Lemmond

Niskayuna - Joseph Vann Lemmond, a long-time resident of Niskayuna and most recently of Kingsway Village in Schenectady, died on Monday afternoon, March 16, 2009, at Ellis Hospital. Members of his family were with him when he peacefully passed away. Born in 1922 in Monroe, North Carolina, the son of William O. and Vera Lemmond, Joe graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College and North Carolina State University. After serving in the Signal Corps of the US Army during WWII, Joe moved to Lynn, MA, where he began his career with the General Electric Company and where he met his future wife, Ann Bartlett. In June of 1951, they were married in Swampscott, MA. In 1963, Joe and his family moved to Niskayuna where he lived for 45 years. He was an active member of the community and enjoyed many strong friendships, especially those in his Valencia Road neighborhood. Joe reluctantly retired from GE in 1998, after more than 40 years as an electrical engineer. He worked on projects for GE all over the world, from Indonesia to Libya to Quebec. Since his retirement, Joe has been an active member of the GE Elfun Society. He loved and was loved by his family; his happiest times were large family gatherings and celebrations. He took care of his family in his quiet and loving way. When his last and best dachshund, Heidi, went blind, Joe took good care of her for as long as he could. Joseph enjoyed and used checklists. He kept his hair short and combed neatly, his shoes shined, his car clean, and his checkbook balanced. He voted in every election. He would think this obituary is too long. His beloved wife of 53 years, Ann Lemmond, died in 2005. Joe took special care of her in the final years of her life. His devoted brother, Charles Q. Lemmond and his wife Beverly, live in Scotia, NY. Joseph is survived by his four sons and three grandchildren. David Lemmond and his wife Shelley live in Silver Spring, Maryland; Joseph Lemmond Jr. lives in Albany, NY; Peter Lemmond lives in Falmouth, MA; and Robert Lemmond and his wife Karen live in Marblehead, MA. His granddaughter, Sara Lemmond, lives in Williamsburg, VA. Jonathan Lemmond, a grandson, lives in Berkeley, CA. Four-year-old Nicholas Bartlett Lemmond, Joe's youngest grandchild, lives with his parents in Marblehead, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am at St. Helens Church in Niskayuna on Saturday, March 21. Burial at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna following the Mass. Calling hours will be on Friday evening, March 20, from 5 to 8 pm at Jones Funeral Home at 1502 Union Street in Schenectady.
