Obituary of Janet R.F. Crandell

Janet Reid Ralph Fentiman Crandell died September 24, 2016 at the age of 88. She was born and raised in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Marie Louise Hatcher Ralph and Richard Reid Roland Ralph. She attended American University in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Union College in Schenectady. She earned her Master's degree in Social Work at SUNY Albany. Janet worked as a psychiatric social worker for New York State for twenty-five years, at the Saratoga County Mental Health Clinic and at the Capital District Psychiatric Center, in Albany and in Schenectady. She also worked professionally with Skidmore College Counseling Service, Schenectady Alcoholism Clinic, Visiting Nurse Association, and other agencies. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Bruce Crandell; his son, David Crandell; his granddaughter, Lori MacIntyre; and by her sister, Marie-Louise Ralph Turner. Janet's marriage to Donald Fentiman ended in divorce. Janet is survived by her daughters: Linda Fentiman of New York City, Sandra Fentiman of Utica, NY, and Donna Fentiman of Wrentham, MA, and their spouses; five grandchildren: Jamie and Rachel Levine, Weston and Dale Fellows, and Lauren Rich, and spouses; and two great-grandsons: Riley and Tristan Fellows. She also leaves four nephews: William, James and Charles Turner, and their spouses, and Charles Dove. In addition, her life was enhanced by her late husband's family, including her step-daughters: Kathie Mitchell, Carol Crandell and Patti Crandell, and their spouses; as well as grandchildren: Anne-Marie Warren, Peter Crandell, Dawn Israel, and Nena Long; great-grandchildren: Rozwell, Jacob, Justis and Brooke Warren, Sequoia Rose Israel, Kayla Kenner and Kelsey MacIntyre; great-great-grandson Everett Kenner, and nephews and nieces. She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Schenectady, the National Association of Social Workers, and the Upper Hudson Association of Phi Beta Kappa. She was a volunteer Chaplain's Aide at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital. Janet loved God; she treasured her family and friends. She enjoyed classical music, theatre, literature and learning. She liked to write. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at First Reformed Church, 8 N. Church St., Schenectady, NY. Entombment will be in the Columbarium at First Reformed Church of Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to Scholarships for Campers, Camp Fowler, 1790 Grand Boulevard, Schenectady, NY 12309.
