To John's family: My deepest sympathy. John and I worked together for more than 30 years and it was a strong relationship. As two red-headed irishmen, we seemed to hit it off immediately. In our off-time, he introduced me to golf and we often played as he futilely tried to bring my games up to his, right up to our retirement together when he made me his partner in a pre-tournament round at Pleasant Valley as guests of his friend, Cuzzy Mingolla. Back in the 60s, we even had a round and a get-together with your family (you probably were too young to remember) while vacationing at the same time at Cape Cod. When he was sports editor and I was news editor of The Evening Gazette, we were always compatible. He was a superb sportswriter and editor and an all-round excellent newsman. He was one of those people you never forget.
