Alf Aage Thyrring, 92, passed away July 15, 2013 at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia, New York.
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark on July 30, 1921, Alf was the son of the late Arthur Thyrring and the late Blenda (Mortensen) Thyrring. He was predeceased by his loving wife Charlotte (Dunbar) Thyrring who passed on May 30, 2006 and his caring brother Frank Thyrring. Survivors include his three devoted daughters, Cynthia A. (Richard) Krosky (Rotterdam), Debra G. (David) Sommer (Loon Lake) and Shelley T. (James) Phillips (Schenectady), his cherished grandchildren, Erik (Lorinda) Gandrow, Glenn Gandrow, Kristina Krosky, Jamie Sommer, Jodi (Harold) Talbot, Sarah & Alexandra Phillips; and great-granchildren Zachery, Nathan & Emily Gandrow and Dylan & Austin Talbot; his adorable, loving cat Cady.
He was a graduate of Waterveliet High School. Al was a member of the local Plumbers and Steamfitters Union #105 and worked in that field for over 40 years, retiring from the Schenectady City School District in l983. He was a patriotic man who served as a gunners mate on the S.S. TA Johnston in the U.S. Navy Merchant Marines during WWII. Alf was a member of the Disabled American Veterans/Empire State, American Legion 1450 Halfmoon, Masonic Phoenix Lodge, Troy and the Zion Lutheran Church, Schenectady. His passion for maintaining a daily workout was evident as he lived a long and healthy life.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff on N-2 & N-3 at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their dedication to their father's care and wellbeing particularly during his last few days.
At the request of Alf, services will be immediate family only. He will be buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, New York. Contributions may be made in his name to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Avenue, Glenville, New York 12302.
