I have always been grateful for my Niskayuna education. Marie Felthousen (always Mrs. to me, the student) was my stand-out 11th grade English teacher. She encouraged my interest in reading and and even more, my love for writing. I have a paper somewhere ? written for her class. I remember specifically reading "Babbitt" by Sinclair Lewis ( among others) and I was totally involved. Good class discussions; she was fair, with oft-times sarcastic, but right-on, criticism and observations. ( A- on the paper if I recall.) Fun and interesting (with that demure smile !) and I always felt she cared about me.
I have seen Mrs. Felthousen from time to time (Co-op, of course !) but not in a long while. She always remembered me,
a student from 50 years ago, and I am sure she remembered countless students. I am so grateful that, during one of those
Co-op sightings, I shouted out: "You were one of my best teachers ever !" She gave me the demure smile.
Thank you, Mrs. Felthousen. You have made a difference in my life.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Marie and her family. I was truly blessed to know Marie. Over the past year or so our weekly visits have had a profound impact on me. Marie became a dear friend and confidant to me. Her wisdom, kind words and often her advice she shared with me will always be remembered. May Marie be at peace with her beloved Ronnie and her mom and dad. RIP Marie...you were special! ❤️

Prayers to all who shared her life. Marie touched many hearts. I was just thinking of her the other day, even though it's been nearly 50 years since I was in her class. I suspect some thought she was a tough teacher, but I think it's because she pushed us to read and write and think about it all, rather than just sleepwalk through it. I had always been a reader, and Marie's encouragement was very helpful and important to me. I'm not sure I would have been able to push through the family obstacles and go to college without it. I'm sure she helped launch a lifetime of wanting to read and talk about books for many people. I know she was a blessing to many, and will be much missed.
With warm regards,
Susan Rexford
