Obituary of Muriel D. Miller

Please share a memory of Muriel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Schenectady-Muriel “Murph” Miller, 90, of Kingsway Arms Nursing Center, died peacefully on October 7 after a long illness.

Born in Schenectady, she was the daughter of Raymond and Gladys Wilson Randles.  A graduate of Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady and Cornell University, Muriel taught in area elementary schools for 35 years, specializing in the fourth grade.  She was a lifelong member of Faith United Methodist Church in Schenectady and served there in many capacities from board member to bazaar arranger and creator of angels for Christmas trees.

Murph was fortunate to enjoy two long, happy marriages. Her first husband, Robert Dean of Scotia and father of her son, Mark Dean of West Palm Beach, Florida, pre-deceased her in 1964. Robert “Dusty” Miller of Niskayuna pre-deceased her in 2013.  Her brother, David W. Randles of Niskayuna, pre-deceased her in 2003.

After retiring from teaching, Muriel enjoyed wintering in Florida with husband “Dusty.” Together they became collectors of Native American artifacts.  She also assembled a remarkable collection of angels made from porcelain, stuffing, or straw and well costumed.  Her skill in crafts included quilling angel shapes, which she distributed to friends and family. She was an accomplished hostess.  Holiday time was always special at “Aunt Murph’s”, with at least three trees - the greatest of which was the Angel Tree.  She was modest about her talents. But among them, she was a fine conversationalist.

Murph is survived by her son, Mark Dean (partner, Lawrence Brennan), her sister-in-law, Carol Randles of Niskayuna, and her nephew, Edward Randles (Helene Dauerty) of South Bend, Indiana.
She is also survived by four step children: Terry Rafferty, Dan Miller (Carol), Sue Birdsall (Max) and Mark Miller (Christine.)  Surviving grand children are: Joshua Witkowski, Sarah Strange, Molly McCaffrey, Dana Miller, Robby Miller, Sean Fortune, and Ryan Fortune.  Great grand children are: Neil McCaffrey, Pearl Strange, and Killian Miller.

The Miller and Randles families wish to thank the entire staff of Kingsway Arms Nursing Center for their care and warm attention to Murph during her three years’ residency. Many on the staff expressed a personal grief in losing such a good lady.

A Funeral Service will be conducted at Jones Funeral Home at 1503 Union St., Schenectady, on Saturday, October 13 at 11 am.  A visitation will be from 10 am prior to the service. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Colonie, NY
