John Karl (Jack), Schwartz, Jr. ,88, of Schenectady, New York passed away on September 22, 2018 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. He was a resident of the Kingsway Community in Schenectady.
Visitation will be held at Jones Funeral Home 1503 Union St. Schenectady, NY on Thursday Sept. 27th from 6:30 pm-8:30pm. Funeral service will be held at Jones Funeral Home on Friday, Sept. 28th at 11:00 am with Father Derek Roy of Christ Church, Ballston Spa officiating. Entombment will follow at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church Columbarium, Colonie, NY.
Jack was born in Amsterdam, NY to John K. Schwartz Sr. and Ruth Kindon Schwartz on May 4, 1930. He was a graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam, NY. He earned a degree in English from Union College, and a Master degree from the University at Albany in Education. He married Jeanne McDermott in 1954 and they had 56 loving years together. After two years of Army service in TX, Jack and Jeanne returned to NY. He taught high school first in Coxsackie then at Shaker High School for thirty-two years. Summers and school holidays were spent driving buses for Greyhound and later for Yankee Trails. He was a longtime member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Colonie, NY.
As an alumni, Jack enjoyed attending sports at Union College and he was a season ticket holder for Union College Men's Hockey since the teams inception. He was thrilled to witness Union Hockey Dutchmen win the national NCAA championship in 2014.
Jack enjoyed an annual fishing and camping trip with his friends and included the sons and grandsons of the original group. The 'Black Fly Festival' was a eagerly anticipated end of the school year event.
A kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, Jack is survived by his children, Paul (Anne) of Webster, NY, Ann Trolenberg of Guilderland, NY. Janet Schwartz (Young Smith) of Lexington, KY, Julie Adams (Kevin) of Charlton, NY and Marcia Walsh (Thomas) of Westfield, MA. His Grandchildren Kameron (Caitlin) and Thomas Schwartz, Erik, Jennifer and Alex Trolenberg, Harper Smith, Kendra, Brooke and Madison Adams and Matthew, Scott and Lindsay Walsh, great-grandson, Tyler Trolenberg. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of over 50 years, Jeanne M. Schwartz, and a son-in-law, Kurt Trolenberg.
