Obituary of Ursula "Sue" Settle

Glenville-Ursula “Sue” Settle went on angels wings to God on August 18th, 2018.  She was residing at Glendale Home and passed just a week short of her 96th birthday.  Born in West Salem, Wisconsin on August 26, 1922 to Wendell and Orma (Elsen) McEldowney, Sue was known for her baked goods and soups, always ready at a moment’s notice to serve to friends or family.

Raised and schooled in West Salem, WI Sue went on to attend Whitewater State Teachers College and graduated from Prospect Hall in Milwaukee, WI. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, she worked in aeronautical estimating at A.O. Smith Corp.(1942-1943). Later at the age of 19 and with her parents’ permission, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. Women’s Reserve (1943-1945), attaining the rank of lieutenant. She is part of the “Women in Military Service for America” Memorial in Arlington, VA. Following her military service she was employed by Trans World Airlines (TWA) as a stewardess from 1946-1948.

Sue married Carl Settle, Jr. of Schenectady, NY in 1948 and the couple raised daughters, Sandy, Carol, and Robin, at their country home in Scotia, NY.  She later joined Carl Jr. in the family Firestone Tire business, Carl Settle, Inc., serving as Vice President and Secretary from 1968 until the business was sold in 1987.

Community involvement included Soroptimist International of Schenectady, Beukendaal Chapt. #528 Order of the Eastern Star, N.Y. State Home Bureau, Beukendaal Fire Dept. Auxiliary, former Treasurer/Secretary Board of Fire Commissioners Fire District 5, Town of Glenville.  Sue was a proud and long-time member of Union Presbyterian Church in Schenectady, serving as a Deacon and Trustee, as well as secretary of the Albany Presbytery Women’s Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Settle, Jr., brothers, Winton and Robert McEldowney, and sister, Ardith Bahr. Survivors include daughters Sandra Wagoner of Apple Valley, MN, Carol Carpenter of Phoenix, AZ, and Robin Jerauld of Otego, NY, as well as 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grand daughters, and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life to honor Sue will take place on Saturday Oct. 20th at 11am at her home, 37 Van Voast Lane Scotia, NY.   Family and friends are invited to attend and partake in a light lunch following the service.
